I can’t believe it’s not brick

If you’re looking for a brick garage make sure you consider Premier Brick from Compton as you could save yourself a lot of money, time and mess.

Compton’s Premier Brick garages look just like the real thing, but are in reality a concrete garage with a very impressive brick effect coating.  The Premier Brick range of garages was produced in response to customer research that identified many people wanting a new garage next to their house would prefer a brick finish garage to the well established spar finish concrete garages.

Months of product development followed to ensure that the new range of brick effect garages would be suitable for the Compton brand that has been built on years of satisfying customers.  Many finishes were tested and dismissed usually because they cracked - a common problem  on non-Compton garages.  However, a solution was found and was then put to the test by independent experts CERAM who commented that Compton’s exclusive solution was “A real advancement in the aesthetics and technical performance of prefabricated concrete panel system building”.

Compton’s Premier Brick Garage really does look like the real thing.  All you miss is the hassle, mess and long timescales for building that are all too common with expensive brick garages.  You simply won’t see any panel joint marks and CERAM’s intensive testing ensures it stands up to the closest scrutiny.

Garage Roof Pitch Options produce different looking garages

February 22, 2010
Posted in Garages — Written by Neil

Leading manufacturers of concrete garages will offer you a choice of different roof pitches that will provide you with an important decision to make as the choice of your garage roof pitch really does determine the look of your garage.

The Flat garage roof sometimes referred to as a Pent roof will feature a slight fall from front to back in order to drain rain water away. This is the most discrete roof but can be climbed onto easier than pitched roofs. Leading concrete garage manufacturers such as Compton will ensure your Flat garage roof is manufacture out of vandal resistant steel with an anti condensation coating applied to the inside.

Apex garage roofs are typically 12.5 degrees and use fibre cement roof sheets as standard. These tend to look slightly more traditional than flat roofs and enable you to choose other options such as coloured roof sheets or granular steel tiles.

The final option is a traditionally pitched 25 degree roof. This is only available from Compton Buildings and is called the Banbury roof. Fittingly the Banbury Garage roof is fitted with granular steel roof tiles as standard onto a traditionally felt lined and battened roof supports.

Secure Garages for motorbikes

February 4, 2010

More motorbikes and scooters are stolen each year than cars. Around 50,000 motorbikes are stolen each year in the UK. Don’t give thieves an easy ride - put your bike in a secure Compton Motorcycle Garage! Protect your bike from the weather, vandals and theft by choosing a Compton Motorbike Garage!

Choose your building from our complete range as any garage can be adapted for the needs of a motorcyclist. The full range of finishes are available including spar, rockstone, red brick, buff brick, brown brick and deep red brick so you can choose what looks best next to your home.

Our motorcycle garage range comes with an Apex pitched roof but Flat versions are available. Appropriate sizes start from around 6ft by 10ft with a secure 4ft wide steel door, but if you want to have the space to work on your bike and store your accessories, we would suggest choosing one of our concrete garages typically associated with housing a car such as 8ft wide by 16ft.

There are a host of security options for your garage that you should consider including laminated glass in the windows, extra locking points on your door and even extra secure roof sheets to prevent the most determined burglar wheeling your bike off into the back of his van.

Our motorcycle garages aren’t exclusively bought by motorcyclists as these Apex roofed stores are ideal for storing all of those things overflowing from the house that would often be stored in a less secure timber shed.

We are confident in the materials used in all our buildings, we’ve detailed our procedures and material options below so people can make an informed decision about the type of building needed and the quality we provide.

Concrete

Steel reinforced vibrated concrete panels. Panels are connected using 8mm galvanised steel bolts, galvanised steel washers and nuts. Joints are mastic sealed.

Steel

Mild steel roof trusses and portal frames are manufactured and welded on site at Fenny Compton, they are primed with a water based primer before leaving the factory.

They can be painted with Hammerite or similar on site, if required. Roof trusses are securely connected to the concrete wall panels using 8mm galvanised steel bolts, washers and nuts.

Roofing

Flat Galvanised steel, 75mm (3”) corrugation continuous length sheet – no joints to leak and with

a roof sloping from front to rear. All roof sheets are treated with anti condensation treatment to minimize any condensation problems. Sheets are fixed to timber or steel rafters (dependant on width) with either roofing nails or galvanised bolts and clips, using black washers and caps externally for weatherproofing.

Apex Fibre cement sheets, 127mm (5”) corrugation, 6mm (¼”) thick, fastened with 6mm galvanised steel bolts and clips onto black primed steel roof trusses and purlins, with black washers and caps externally for weatherproofing. Fibre cement close fitting ridge capping is supplied as standard for better weather proofing and less condensation problems. Also available in a choice of four colours.

The tiles are manufactured from Aluzinc coated steel in a granulated design to give a natural stone appearance. Choose from bronze, terracotta, green, charcoal, red or brindle colours. Timber purlins are bolted to the steel roof trusses, and steel wind braces are built in to give the stability expected from our top of the range building.

Optional Roofs Granular steel roof tiles (Apex). Supplied on a traditional roof structure, with preservative treated timber battens fixed to factory primed roof trusses, over a layer of roof felt, the steel roof tiles give a completely different appearance to your building. With a choice of bronze, terracotta, green, charcoal, red or brindle, you can compliment most existing roof colours. Plastisol steel roof sheets (Flat & Apex). As a security option, with maintenance free finish. Plastisol roofing is fixed with secure self coloured fixings, making it difficult to remove without a specialised tool. All steel roof sheets are 0.7mm thick and are factory treated with anti-condensation treatment to minimise condensation.

Sand and Cement Fillet

Supplied on every building, the sand and cement fillet is laid internally on perimeter walls, and helps to prevent water leaking under the concrete panels. Exposed positions, or surrounding ground level higher than the base may well mean the fillet eventually leaks.

Maintenance Free Concrete Garages

January 29, 2010
Posted in Garages — Written by Neil

Concrete garages are built to last and can be virtually maintenance free.  The latest maintenance free concrete garages such as the Superior range from Compton Buildings feature plastisol coated steel doors, PVCu or plastisol coated steel fascias, PVCu windows, guttering and a whole host of other features that prevent water entering the garage.  The result is a brand new garage that will stand the test of time and look good for years!

Many retailers of concrete garages have been selling the product for over 25 years and explain that some of the very first garages they sold are still going strong and look like they will be for many years to come.  The old post and panel construction may be a thing of the past, but maintenance free garages certainly aren’t.

Unlike traditional timber garages, concrete garages won’t rot or warp and don’t require constant maintenance or retreating.  Maintanence free concrete garages should see garages lasting longer than ever before and when you divide the price of a garage over its lifetime it really shows what a fantastic investment a new concrete garage is.

The latest range of garages to hit the market are fully fire tested timber framed garages benefiting from modern building technology.  Ultimate Garages are lined and insulated, taller than most concrete garages, feature a steel tile roof  and a choice of 8 different finishes.  Again these are maintenence free and are ideal for the increasing number of people who want to use their garage for more than simply storing the car.

Garage condensation and Compton’s GrafoTherm anti-condensation treatment

January 21, 2010
Posted in Garages — Written by Kirsten

About 20 gallons of water (about 2 bath-fulls!) are used to make the average building, and even more water goes into the concrete in your base. It can take 2/3 months to dry, especially in winter. This is exactly the same as a new house.

Your building needs to be well ventilated, at least initially, to ensure that it dries out properly. If the drying process is not complete, you may have a condensation problem. A by-product of inadequate ventilation is mould

growth on the inside of the roof sheets, another reason to make sure your building is dry and continues to be well ventilated. Some areas of the country are still prone to condensation, even with high levels of ventilation and reasonable drying time.

Our Flat Spar buildings feature a galvanised steel, one piece front to rear roof sheet coated with a GrafoTherm anti condensation treatment.  To demonstrate how GrafoTherm works, let’s look at the condensation cycle in an uninsulated building with a roof that is made of partly GrafoTherm-treated & partly untreated steel sheets. The example shows a normal early spring or late autumn day.

evening

Phase 1 - Evening
When the sun has set, the outdoor temperature falls rapidly. The temperature of the roof will soon reach dew-point and condensation starts to appear on the untreated part of the roof.  The GrafoTherm coat insulates and reduces the temperature difference between the steel sheet and the air. No condensation appears on the treated part of the roof.

night

Phase 2 - Night
During cold nights with a clear sky, the temperature of a steel roof can be considerably lower than that of the outdoor air. This is due to long-wave heat radiation from the roof towards the sky. Heavy condensation now appears on the untreated surface and starts dripping.
Condensation now also occurs on the steel surface under the GrafoTherm coat. However, condensation cannot take place on the surface of the GrafoTherm coating.
The micropores of the GrafoTherm coating adsorb the moisture and distribute it over the whole surface, where it is temporarily stored and even evaporates if the conditions are right, so no dripping!

morning

Phase 3 - Morning
The sun rises and the outdoor air is warmed up. The temperature of the steel roof will soon exceed the dew-point. The untreated steel surface gradually stops dripping and becomes dry.  The GrafoTherm coating will become dry very rapidly and will very soon have regained its capacity to meet the next condensation period. Due to the size of the micropores, the surface tension of the water is broken and the moisture evaporates two to three times faster than it would on the untreated steel surface.

Concrete Garages Help Motorists Avoid Fines

January 11, 2010
Posted in Garages — Written by admin

The recent bad weather that has hit the whole of the UK could be costing motorists thousands of pounds. Concrete garages will help motorists avoid a £1000 fine for driving with restricted vision as snow will not fall on cars securley stored in garages. Compton concrete garages are available for little more than the fine that could be enforced.

As well as saving you money, putting your car in a Compton concrete garage can also save you the time it takes to scrape the ice off windows each morning - giving ou a few more precious minutes under the duvet!
